Backup Strategy

I am a newbie to SQL.
I am running SQL 2000 on a SBS 2003 R2 box. What is the best way to make
sure our databases are backed up in the event of a data loss or a crash?
Thanks,
Rich
The easiest way is to create a maintenance plan using the SQL Enterprise
Manager.
Or you can create jobs that use T-SQL statement to backup the databases.
Always make sure that the backup's are stored on offline storage, eg another
server or tapes.
The best way depends or your businessneeds and databasesize.

|||Hello,
You could use the maintenence wizard to create a backup plan and schedule
it. But I had lot of issues with maintenanceplans and so i went for TSQL
backup
script and schedule it using SQL Server agent.
Take a look into the below article:-

Backup Restore of DB

Hi,
Newbie to Database administration. I would like to know what kind of
permission do I need to give a developer so that he can do restore/backup of
database other then the system DB?
Many thanksI would read the BOL reference for backinging up database permissions...
do a find for "permissions".
Backup
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186865.aspx
you are most likely looking for the db_backupoperator database role.

Restore
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186858.aspx
you are most likely looking for the db_dbcreator database role.

That should be what you need...

Backup Question For Newbie

We use SQL for a few minor applications, and currently, we just down the
service at night and run a regular tape backup. However, that is no longer
a solution (SQL has to be up at night) so I'm researching using the built-in
backup features of SQL.
My question is this. I set up a test database, and just did a few backups
of it to a file. When I do a restore database, where is it pulling the
restore information from? (The list of all backups that I have done). If I
delete the actual backup files, I still see the list of all the backups I
have done, even though the actual backup file was deleted. Is there a way
to clear that information out?
Also, if I do a simple backup of each database at night, overwriting the
backup file, how many of the backups will it list? Is this behavior
controllable?
Thanks.Michael,
The backup information is stored in the system tables in the MSDB database.
See sp_delete_backuphistory for clearing the backup history info for a job.
A backup to a file will apend the backup to the file by default if overwrite
is specified only one backup will exist on the file at a time however the
backup history will probably still show all of the backups for the database.

backup problems - mediaset

Good morning all,
I have a problem with sql server backup. I am very newbie in sql server
and I would like to backup my database simply.
I went to my database and I clicked with the right button of mouse and
I choose the option backup databases then I choose the full backup and
I add a location in E:/MsSQL/Backup/ (database) everything ok but when
I pressed ok I had this error message:
THE VOLUME ON DEVICE E:/MSSQL/BACKUP/20060501MYDATA/IS NOT PART OF
MULTIPLE FAMILY MEDIA SET BACKUP WITH FORMAT CAN BE USED TO FORM NEW
MEDIA SET. DATABASE IS TERMINATING ABNORMALLY.
THIS IS THE SQL SCRIPT:
BACKUP DATABASE [PORTFOLIO] TO [MYDATADISK] WITH NOINIT , NOUNLOAD
,
NAME = N'MYDATA backup', NOSKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT
I do not know how to do? Could someone help me in this topic?
InaHi Ina
Did you use the Database Backup Wizard to do this? In which case you need to
remove any files that are already specified as backup files bafore adding
your new file. You may have specified the backup file incorrectly it should
be something like E:\MsSQL\Backup\20060501MYDATA.dmp i.e. give it a filename
.

Ina|||Hi
You can name the file anything you like, the extension is not mandatory
although I am not sure why you have a '/' at the end of your device?
The backup command was previously DUMP before SQL Server Version 7.0 hence
sp_adddumpdevice is the stored procedure that will create the backup device.

Backup of Sql tables

I am a serious newbie. How do you backup only certain
tables in a database? Thank you.
Angela
There is no way to backup a set of files on a databases, unless these files
are on a different filegroup. So if you really want to do this you will
need a secondary filegroup where either the primary or secondary filegroup
contains the subset of tables you want to backup.
