Backup Sql database to mapped network drive on another server prob
database (on a windows 2000 server) to a mapped network drive(mapped to
another 2000 server). I am a user on both servers (administrator). I can see
the the drive in explorer. I can access the files.
I cannot see the drive in enterprise manager. Can someone help? Thanks.

Backup to a network drive must be done with T-SQL Backup command (check it
in Books OnLine). Use UNC names, not mapped drives.

|||I understand that's one way to do it and I appreciate your answer. As I said
earlier, I was backing up to a network drive manually and through the
maintenance. I have been doing this for the last 6 months. Something got
change and I don't know where to start. Any suggestions as to what I can take
a look would be appreciated.

|||It's not just one way to do it , it is the recommended way to do it. What
you see as a user means nothing unless that account is the same one that SQL
Server runs under. It is that account that does the backup regardless of
who initiates it or how they initiate the backup. Mapped drives can easily
get blown away or become unusable when changes are made on either end. So
if you want to continue using a mapped drive (which no one will recommend)
you need to log on to the server (database server) under the account that
sql server is running under and make sure the drive is mapped properly and
it still has the correct permissions to see and write to that share. If not
then the backup can not work properly.

backup Plan SQL 2000
Hello all,
I would like to be able to backup our databases to a network share mapped drive. Is this possible? When every I go in to setup a maintenance plan it will only allow me to select local drive as the backup location. If my server crashes its not going to do a whole lot of good if my databases are stored locally (I do also backup up to tape every niight). I backup the databases every hour to local disk and would like to send them to one of my MS Storage Servers on the network.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Jason
YOu could use a network share using the UNC path, but if you want to make sure that the data is transfered correctly, I would stick saving the backup file to a local drive and copying it over afterwards using a restartable copying mechanism like robocopy or xcopy.

Backup on Network/Mapped drives Using Enterprise Manager
This is My Query step by step description:
1. I want to take backup of sql server databases on network drives(mapped
drives) Using Enterprise Manager tool only.
2. I am getting network drives list on some machines not on all machines
when I opened Backup Device location window in Enterprise Manager.
3. My SQL Server Services are also configured with domain administrator
account only.
Please let me know the way to get list of network drives when I am taking
backup using Enterprise Manager.(I know the way to work with SQL Query
Analyzer).
Thanks in Advance

Backup locations
Thanks
TinaMethod 1: Create your maintenance plan and pick an
arbitrary backup directory. When you have finished
creating the plan, go to the Jobs under SQL Server Agent
and modify the DB backup Job for the maintenance plan. The
T-SQL in the job step should be something like:
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_sqlmaint N'-PlanID 1115857B-656B-
4064-9F7A-5BD2C6C1A2E6 -BkUpMedia DISK -
BkUpDB "e:\MSSQLBackup" -BkExt "BAK"'
Change the value following -BkUpDB to a UNC of your choice.
Method 2: Forget about the maintenance plan and create a
SQL Server Agent backup job yourself with the BACKUP
statement. You can then specify whatever UNC you fancy,
assuming there is no permission issue.

drives consistantly because the SQL Service may not see the same mappings as
the console login. The solution is to type the UNC name of the folder in
the target location field.
You also have to make sure that SQL Server can write files to that location.
The easiest way is for you to run SQL under a domain-level account and give
that account permissions on the target folder. Use the following SQL Script
to test access.
xp_cmdshell 'dir \\MyUNCRemote\ShareName'
I suggest giving FULL CONTROL on the target folder to the SQL Service
account. Make sure you have both share permission and underlying NTFS
permissions set correctly.
