Backup SQL Server 2005
I created a job to backup my database. Sometimes I get the following error:
The job failed. Unable to determine if the owner (DOMAIN\Administrator) of job Backup.Subplan_1 has server access (reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'DOMAIN\Administrator'<c/> error code 0x54b. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 15404))
I already deleted the job and made it again. Same problem. I don't get that error every day. For example: I got it 4 times last month.
Does anybody know what I can do to resolve the error? This appears to be a problem with AD. I would guess the job is not able to authenticate itself, or query information from AD. That said, it REALLY a bad idea to run jobs as Domain Admin. You should use service accounts.

Backup Restore Fails
Hi,
I ran a backup procedure and BAK file created.
I moved the file to another server, tried to restore and failed with following error:
"Cannot open backup device 'C:\*****.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)"
I checked the file on the original server and the file is accessible: I can see its content with RESTORE FILELISTONLY command.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Mark
Are you using the Restore dialog to do this operation or are you using T-SQL?
Either case, ensure that the account under which SQL server service is running has access to the 'C' drive.

BackUp master log failed
Any one !
I can not create the backup of the master db log.
Is there a restriction on master db log?
thanks in advance
Ed
The master database transaction log, as most system databases, is set to
Simple recovery mode. This negates the ability (or need) to backup the
transaction log.

BACKUP LOG failed - no reason given
I have an agent job that backs up transaction logs of several databases,
referring a maintenance plan.
Recently, one of the backups began to fail sometimes - the one of the
largest database. The messages in the log are:
...
Log backed up: Database: OLAP, creation date(time): 2004/01/21(11:42:56),
first LSN: 4615:16:1, last LSN: 4617:16:1, number of dump devices: 1, device
information: (FILE=1, TYPE=DISK:
{'D:\MSSQL\MSSQL\BACKUP\OLAP_tlog_200501211015.TRN '}).
Log backed up: Database: RGRSQL, creation date(time): 2004/01/08(10:20:44),
first LSN: 50593:45:1, last LSN: 50614:57:1, number of dump devices: 1,
device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=DISK:
{'D:\MSSQL\MSSQL\BACKUP\RGRSQL_tlog_200501211015.T RN'}).
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP LOG [VMFG] TO DISK =
N'D:\MSSQL\MSSQL\BACKUP\VMFG_tlog_200501211015.TRN ' WITH INIT , NOUNLOAD ,
NOSKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT
MSKB article says to examine the previous errors in the log, but there are
none, neither in sql server log, nor in any event log of the machine.
And then on the next scheduled time, it succeeds. Then again fails. No
pattern.
Pretty much same thing is happening with the full database backup - same
database.
"CHECKDB found 0 allocation errors and 0 consistency errors in database
'VMFG'."
How to troubleshoot it? is there a way to make it to tell _why_ it failed?

Backup Job Notification Error
failed for three of my servers every morning while in the
real sense the backups completed successfully. I did
reboot one of the servers but this did not reslove the
issue. Any help on this will be appreaciated please. Are these databases in Simple recovery mode? If so, any
transaction log backup will fail, and a SQL Maintenance
Plan will show an overall failure to execute (although the
full backups will run).
Also, have you tried restoring one of the backups that
completed? Another thing to check is to make sure the job
doesn't have additional steps, or operator alerts, or any
of the optional settings on. If execution of any of the
other activities should occur, overall failure of the job
may be flagged.
Also, in the job history, what is the exact error you're
receiving -- that is, when the Show Details option is
checked?

backup job
scheduled backup job always failed no matter it manually run or scheduled. I
use query analyzer and login as john and copy the script from the job and
execute it and IT RUN. OK, I change the job owner to sa and it runs. Can
anyone please tell me why the job run in query analyzer but not in Enterprse
Manager and how to fix it? Thanks.
What job step type? Is John an SQL Server or a Windows login? What exact error for the job? If you
define an output file for the jobstep, what error(s) do you see there?

Thank you
ATI've seen it because it is trying to fix indexes while users are online and

Backup issuesPlease HEELP!
The job failed. Unable to determine if the owner (MAMSI\lwilliams) of job DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'DB Maintenance Plan1' has server access (reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'MAMSI\lwilliams'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 8198)).
Is it stating that my user group in windows NT doesn't have the rights to run a backup on this server?
Please help!!!
LystraMy first guess would be that the account used to start the SQL Agent service isn't a domain admin, so the agent can't even see what permissions the MAMSI\lwilliams login has in the domain.
NT security is a tough nut to crack at first, mostly because there are so many levels to it. This makes it robust, but a bugger to figure out at first!

Backup issues
I am very new to SQL Express. A database is located on a local machine. When I try to do a backup I get the following error:
Backup failed for server ‘server name’
(Microsoft.sql server.Express.smo)
Additional information:
Set property Devices to accomplish this action.
(Microsoft.sql server.Express.smo)
Their IT tecnicians insits that I have full administrative rights.
I am lost for a solution.
Would it be wise to shrink the database, detach from the database and copy both the mdf and idf to a different machine? I have never done this procedure before.
Please help.
Could you please send over the executed script ?Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Did anyone get a resolution to this? I'm having the same problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server 2005 Express and then reinstalled and it worked fine. I was able to back up the database for two days. Then the error started coming up again and now I'm getting the "Set property Devices to accomplish this action." error again.
I have no clue what property device it's talking about or where to set them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Backup issues
My SQL server backups are running as nicely as they used to. Recently I
got the following error:
Message: The job failed. The owner () of job DB Backup Job for DB
Maintenance Plan 'Daily Backup1' does not have server access.
I'm not much of an SQL admin so I wasn't quite sure how to proceed. I
deleted the existing maintenance plans and created identical new ones
which worked fine for a couple of weeks. Now this error is back. What
exactly is causing this? Is there another way to fix it without deleting
and recreating these backup jobs?
Thanks

Backup into another machine.
but failed to do so...
Like backup database Health to disk =
'\\nSys0120\Backup\Health\bkHealth05172005'
is the above command is okie ?
Thanks
Hi,
Command looks good, but there are Few Pre requisites to do backup remotely;
1. You Should start SQL server using Domain user who got access to remote
machine Share
2. Should have share in the remote machine
3. If you need to schedule this as a job then SQL Agent should use the same
Domain user in which SQL server was started
4. Restart the services
Now you can execute the Backup script with UNC path
BACKUP Database <dbname> to disk='\\computername\sharenameX\dbname.bak' with
init
Note:
Backup to remote machine will not work if you start SQL server using Local
system account

|||Hari, I did the same which you said but it gave me the following error
I used the following command
backup database test to disk = 'e:\bktest05172005'
"e:" is basically a map drive.
Error :
Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
\Device\LanmanRedirector\nSys0120\share\bktest0517 2005. The data has been
lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or
network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.
OK
Any idea ?
Thanks

|||Hi,
Please follow the same procedure. Do not use mapped drive. Just use UNC
path.
Thanks

Backup hangs in wait-state MSSEARCH
I'm experiencing a very annoying failure when trying to do a backup - I hope you can help where others (including me) have failed.
The setup is a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 version 11.0.8126.0 running on Windows server 2003 Standard edition Service pack 1; it has a SQL-server 2005 version 9.0.2047 running on Windows server 2003 Standard edition Service pack as a back-end.
When I issue a backup of the SharePoint database XXX_SITE which holds round 4 gb. of data (mainly documents) the backup process hangs with a Wait Type 'MSSEARCH', it makes no difference whether I issue it as a single job, or through a maintenance plan.
I tried to stop the MsSearch service on the SharePoint-server, and disabled the Full-Text search on the database but it makes no difference.
The only way I can get a backup is to reboot the server on which SQL-server resides (restarting the SQL-server makes it rather unstable), and do a manual back-up shortly after.
Kim,
This is very likely a bug. I suggest you contact Microsoft support.

|||That wait state indicates problems communicating between SQL and the MSSEARCH service via the COM interface.
There were several known problems that would lead to this situation which have been fixed in SP1, so that might be of help.
The quick solution is to cycle the MSSEARCH service, which should get backups moving.
If you're on SP1, and have this problem frequently, we can work with you to see what's going on. Event Viewer events about COM errors would be the first place to look.
|||Hi Kevin,
We are on SP1, and the oddest thing is that I've disabled MSSEARCH (stopped the process) on the SharePoint server.
The Occurrence is highly frequent i.e. if there has been any user activity on the database the Backup hangs.
|||I'm assuming that you have fulltext catalogs in your database?
So, for SQL 2005, the service is msftesql. If it is disabled, the backup should ignore the fulltext catalogs.
If we can get a dump for sqlservr.exe and msftesql.exe process together with all errorlog and SQLFT*.LOG file, I can take a look and see what is the problem. Feel free to contact me offline @. kevin.farlee@.microsoft.com
Hi! Yes we did have full text catalogues in the database, but since I had disabled full text search for the database, and disabled msftesql, I didn't suspect them. I got however an article from Microsoft support, showing me how I could test for catalogues not properly removed. So I discovered that there still existed an old catalogue, which I ,after and only after re-enabling full text search, were able to delete, since then my backup has worked :0}
Thanks for the all the good will shown in these forums.
