Backup SQLserverAgent is stopped
I m trying to make a backup of a SQL database on I m getting the message
SQLserverAgent is stopped on the target '(local)' server
what is this and what do I have to do to fix it
thanx
SQL Server Agent is the built in scheduler service for SQL Server. This is
usually how backups are done. Maybe if you can explain exactly how you are
attempting to issue a backup we can give a more precise answer.

start:
BACKUP DATABASE YourDB TO DISK = 'F:\sqlbackup'
But you have to be careful when using a device such as this. Backups are
always done under the account sql server is running under. So if you map a

the device as F: it will fail.

Backup Shared Server DB using SQL Server 2005 Management Express
Hi,
I want to backup and/or have a local copy of my DB which is on a shared host. I have an ip addreess and user/pwd, but I am at a loss to find any help for the steps to accomplish this in Management express.
Am I using the right tool?
You will have to keep in mind that backup / restore will only either reach local drives or accessible UNC shares. I do my backups using the Copy Database wizard in management Studio, but if you only have SQL Server Express you can only use the SQL Hosting Pusblishing kit to destribute the database to a hoster and not the way back unless you local database is also published to the internet and the remote server is SQL Express.Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Thanks.
So what is the recommended method/product to take a backup of a SQL DB from a shared host that uses a SQL 2005 Server?
|||I would recommend buying a CAL of SQL Server to have the advanced tools for importing data including the copy database wizard.Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Backup problem at Cluster (SQL Server 2000)
SQL Server 2000 sitting on cluster windows2003. Complete backup to local
disk file, file size was about 4G if sometimes it could be finished
successfuly. Most times (80%) it failed.
Successful complete backup running took less than 4 minutes.
If failed, normally stopped at about 23 seconds.
Tansaction log backup is no problem.
job step:
BACKUP DATABASE [dbname] TO DISK = N'E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$SQLC02\BACKUP\dbname.bak' WITH INIT , NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'dbname full backup', NOSKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT
manually run the job get this err:
Executed as user: domainname\user1. ConnectionRead (WrapperRead()).
[SQLSTATE 01000] (Message 258) General network error. Check your network
documentation. [SQLSTATE 08S01] (Error 11) 10 percent backed up. [SQLSTATE
01000] (Error 3211). The step failed.
Database has 1 data file + 1 log file. (I know this is stupid to be having
only one data file, but nothing I can do to it now.)
I really need some directions. This issue is killing me.
Thanks for help!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to ask obvious questions but... How big is your full DB
(sp_helpdb)? About 4GB I assume. How much free disk space do you have
on your E: drive? Does it always fail around the same point (somewhere
between 10% and 20%)? Is E: a local disk, a SAN attached disk or some
network mapped disk?

Backup on Local/Network drive using Maintenance Plan
Hi,
I have created an sql server 2005 maintenance plan for a daily backup. The plan has two 'Back up database task' i.e. one backup on the local drive while the second on a network drive. When the plan is executed, a backup is created on the local drive but not on the network drive. If i check the log, it says "Access Denied" whereas i have full access to the network drive with complete permissions to read, write and delete.
Can anyone help me understand how to take a backup on both a local and network drive at the same time using a maintenance plan ? I shall be obliged...
Regards...
you have to make sure that the user used to run the maintanence task has sufficient rights on the network share.
Alternatively, you could copy the backup files with a scheduled copy command in windows.. that way, you'll only have to do the backup once in SQL (during backups, your server may suffer a performance hit)
|||Thanks Erik for the reply, i found one another similar reply. It seems to be a privilige problem...
Regards...
Backup on Local Disk Failing! urgent help plz!
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]ConnectionRead (WrapperRead()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
10 percent backed up.
Connection Broken
If i copy a file (2gb) to local disk from network it works. The disk have much space. Any ideas;;;
I get the same error when backuping up even MSDB to a network path using UNC [\\].How large is the db you're trying to back up. How much disk space do you have? Can you backup a very small database?|||As i mentioned; i get the error even backing up MSDB(system) db either on network or local disk. Strangely; when i try backing up any db to local disk using EM; i get the message; backup successfully completed. and the file disappears(0 kb during backup) disappears on the disk!
Killing me!|||How is your SQL Server registered? Are you using the server name or are you using (local) or . ?
Whenever you use the 2 last options to register your server in EM it uses the shared memory driver, If you use the name of your server/instance, It should make it use the network librbary instead. I say that only to get to the point that if it is not a diskspace issue, it may be a memory issue, perhaps RAM going out.
I know that's not really a solution, but perhaps it can help you troubleshoot.|||How is the SQLServerAgent service and the MSSQLServer Service configured on the Log On tab in services? Are they configured to log on as "Local System"? Also, are there any messages in the SQL Server errorlog, or the NT Application event log?|||I don't quite understand "disappears from the disk" part. But in your first post you mentioned something about copying the file (2GB) from a share to a local drive and the backup would work. This leads me to believe that you're appending to the same backup file. I've seen cases when an interupted backup/restore would corrupt the device and no further appends are possible. The only solution would be to re-create the backup file by deleting the old one and creating a new one by backing up your database. Appending is a bad idea because it leads to what I've just described, in which case you DR is down the drain.|||Hi folks, thanx so much for ur input.
RESTARTING the instance just squared it away; so i suspect as mentioned by the fellow, memory problem (but what's the permanent fix?)
I didn't change any SQL-AGENT of SQL changes so far nor did this production machine had been restarted for last 2 months. I just saw my scheduled backup job failed last night and since then i tried restarting the job; backing the databases manually using QA or EM. So i didn't change any settings so far. I couldn't restart the instance during working times so i posted for the suggestion. After the restart it's working.
And, guru? believe me the file on the disk was of zero kb while backing up the db, then after the success message on EM i coldn't find the file; while in QA i get the GENERAL NETWORK error. Wasn't using the append db option!
Howdy!|||See this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;827452|||Hmmm, and I had this in my Favorites for while it was still in the Premier section...Good catch, pshisbey!|||Many thanx to ya all!

Backup of SQL Server 2005 database to local P.C ?
Could anyone please explain how I could backup a SQL Server database
on a server to my local P.C. ?
I am running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio on my P.C.
I need to move the database to another server, but the current hosting
company are very inefficient (slow) at providing me with a database

|||Hi Ekrem,
Thanks for your suggestion.
The problem with the Import / Export wizard is that it doesn't include
primary keys, identities, default column values and foreign keys etc. I tried
creating the tables on my P.C. using a script, which works fine, but then
when I import the data, it resets all of the identity values, which is why I
really need some way of saving the backup (.bak) files to my P.C.

|||Hello,
You can use SQL Server Management Studio to create the backup qutie easily:
1) Select the database you want to backup
2) Right click the database to backup
3) Select Tasks and then Backup
Another option is to just query your database with the following syntax:
BACKUP DATABASE

If I understand your issue correctly, you want to create a backup of
your database and copy that backup to your local machine. If so, then
you need to have access to a file share on the server, or be able to
access FTP on the server, or - be able to share a folder on your system.
If you have access to a file share on the server, just backup to that
file share and then copy the backup file. The same if you have access
to FTP on that server (not sure here, but maybe since you said you are
using a hosting service).
Finally, if you can create a share on your machine that the SQL Server
can see you can then backup using UNC to your file share.
Since this is a hosting service, I do not think you have any other options.

Backup issues
I am very new to SQL Express. A database is located on a local machine. When I try to do a backup I get the following error:
Backup failed for server ‘server name’
(Microsoft.sql server.Express.smo)
Additional information:
Set property Devices to accomplish this action.
(Microsoft.sql server.Express.smo)
Their IT tecnicians insits that I have full administrative rights.
I am lost for a solution.
Would it be wise to shrink the database, detach from the database and copy both the mdf and idf to a different machine? I have never done this procedure before.
Please help.
Could you please send over the executed script ?Jens K. Suessmeyer.
http://www.sqlserver2005.de
|||I am having same problem.I am connected to sql server 2000 instance.
When trying to backup the database i got the same error
Any idea why ?|||
Which Gui are you using ?

|||Could you please then post the resulting Backup SQL command which is available through the script functionality within the Backup UI.

Did anyone get a resolution to this? I'm having the same problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server 2005 Express and then reinstalled and it worked fine. I was able to back up the database for two days. Then the error started coming up again and now I'm getting the "Set property Devices to accomplish this action." error again.
I have no clue what property device it's talking about or where to set them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Backup From SQL server to a Backup server
We are currently running our SQL backups to our local disk drive. Now we'd
like to change the path from local to a shared folder on another server on
another domain.
Is that possible?
Thanks,
Greg
It is very possible. We do it all the time. One tricky thing we ran into
with ours, we had have both SQL services run by the same DOMAIN account for
the job to dump directly to our network store box.

|||You can run backups to a network share - you'll have to make sure that the
SQL Server/Agent Services have access to that shared.
However, if at all possible, I would suggest against it for a couple of
reasons:
1) It will increase that amount of time the backup takes as well as
resources the backup uses to backup the database because you are doing it
over the network.
2) It will increase the possibility of the database backup getting
corrupted. Being that that backup is happening across the network you
increase the likelihood of something happening. I would suggest (if disk
space is a problems and that's why you are doing this) doing the backup
locally and then copying that backup off the machine, you decrease that
likelihood.

|||Your network department can do that. They'll need to know what domain
account you want to use for the services and what access it needs to write
the backups to another server/drive.

Backup from Remote DB and Restore to Local DB in a job
restore it to second system. However I am having trouble will the
commands. I know I can do it using OSQL but I would like to place it
into a job for reuse, and logging, and that is where I am having the
problem. I know I can simply state in the job
BACKUP DATABASE DB TO DISK = '\\server2\f$\DB_full.bak'
But this will only do it for the local system. If I try to run it as an
OSQL command inside the Job, and point it to a second system,
osql -S server1 -E -Q "BACKUP DATABASE DB TO DISK =
'\\server2\f$\DB_full.bak'"
I get the error "Incorrect syntax near 'S'."
I know that you can backup from one server to another using the wizard,
but what is the command line?
Thanks
-Matt-
You have to run this as a command file not as sql from within the job. Try
stuffing into a variable and running an execute sql process shelling out
using xp_cmdshell.

backup files to local PC
The same way you backup any other database - with a BACKUP DATABASE command.
